AOC SINCE 1936

CASSIS WAS THE FIRST APPELLATION D’ORIGINE
CONTRÔLÉE IN FRANCE.

The Cassis Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée was declared on 15 May 1936 – an auspicious date indeed, for Cassis’ ranking as an AOC took place practically simultaneously with the creation of the French INAO (Institut National de l’Origine et de la qualité), the organisation charged with granting the AOC (or Protected Designation of Origin). The Cassis AOC vineyards today cover 215 hectares and produce an average of 7,500 hectolitres per year. The AOC defines strict rules in its production specifications which were modified in 1996. The Cassis AOC is unique in Provence and produces primarily white wines which account for 67% of all AOC Cassis wins. Rosé wine accounts for 30% and red wines account for only 3% of the Cassis AOC.
